I spoke to a former RAF engineer who works on a part-time basis for BAe systems as an investigator. He was directly involved in the investigation of Dave Stock's crash. The cause? *POOR maintenance by civilian engineers who were not trained to service the Lightning to military standards. BEX had at least *FIVE* faults on it when Dave Stock took it up. THREE of those faults would have seen the aircraft grounded had it been in RAF service for significant maintenance. BAe systems will not support, or provide spares to any of it's legacy fast jets that are in civilian hands because they do not trust civilian operators to carry out adequate servicing and maintenance. Dave Stock died because his ejection seat didn't work- DUE TO POOR MAINTENANCE!!

I was around EAA number 1 riverside california But i never built a homebuilt. Im not sure if i ever actually flew in a homebuilt. I was around a marquart charger, that flew beautifully, and a stolp stsrduster too, that was sold as a project.

when i listen to his communications with ground and tower it seems like he was in a hurry as if he was late on his departure or something like that. his haste seems to be what caused him to be so careless here. one thing seems unusual to me is why did he not simply reduce some of that power which would have allowed him to lower the nose and perhaps buy some time to remove the lock like the other owner of this aircraft did when he made the same mistake. lot of room to fly level at this airport so there was no need for a steep climb here on departure. keep in mind that although he was a highly experienced pilot he was new in this airplane. i started a takeoff roll in a king air 90 once with full nose up trim. i had over 1000 hours in the airplane and recognizing what i'd done with just a small power application was what saved me. i simply stopped advancing the power levers because i knew immediately what i'd done because i knew that is why the nose was pitching up. a might have gone too far just like this guy did if i was not so familiar with the airplane.

With the demise of Reno, that will affect the high performance end of the market. There are some fast planes that were built for that venue with not much of a purpose now. Some innovation made for those races for speed, may stagnate. The RV-15 needs to avoid being another Skycatcher. Even Cessna screwed that one up.

In your explanation you say the free turbine setup makes it different to a turboshaft, this is incorrect. A PT6B is a helicopter version, which is still a free turbine but also a turboshaft because of the mayor gearbox it is attached to. It is mainly wording, I know, and a bit confusing. Because all turboprops have gearboxes between them and the prop, so I don't know from which point it changes to a turboshaft by definition.

I'll say as a 40yr old that just got my PPL last year, i started looking at certified aircraft to purchase to build time and start exploring. I found that in my price range, 90-120,000 i would be looking at 40,50,60 year old Cessnas or Cherokees with avionics from the 80's and mid-high time engines. Then I heard about the amateur built aircraft and found Van's. I decided i have the time and i could spread the total cost over several years instead of one lump loan to purchase an aircraft. For about the same as my stated budget, i could have a brand new plane, with modern avionics, little to no loan when complete, and i could maintain it myself saving a lot of money in shop fees down the road. I am just about to finish the tail kit of my RV7 and plan to start on the wings in 2-3 weeks.

Apparently the 787 speed tape is a paint adhesion problem. Possibly because the primer was left out in the sun for UV damage too long. Workers on the wings use suction cups for safety. Pulls off the paint. As for kits, they shouldn't exist in series production. That's a sickness symptom of GA, not an advantage. All producers should certify and FAA has seemingly changed emphasis from posturing paperwork to 'performance based'. Meaning if it seems to work well it passes. Dreamliner used the only aviation certified battery in the world from kokam, just happened to be the most unsafe battery, demonstrating the folly of paperwork over reason. And they should stop making sheet and rivet planes. Single piece composite. Much faster to make, hard to mess up. None of all the metal fatigue bs. And we need small cost effective turbofan engines. Piston prop is tired. turboprop is worst of both worlds. turboprop should not exist.
